FAQ

Who should use SkoolMentor?

SkoolMentor is an excellent resource for High School Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors.
Even Eighth graders have connected with our mentors and learnt about what to expect in High school from them.
High School Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors connect with our mentors to learn how to navigate High School successfully. For example, High school students get personalized information about:
- Science Fair projects
- What AP course load to take
- How to prepare for SAT/ACT
- What activities to pursue to showcase passion for a particular subject
- What shadow opportunities/internships to avail
- What scholarship opportunities to avail
- Study skills
- time management skills
- What mistakes the college student mentors made when they were in High School so the High School students can avoid them
- campus life at the college the mentor is at, whether the college is a good fit for the High school student
- So much more
High School Seniors connect with our mentors mainly for college admissions related activities such as preparing college lists, filling in the college applications, scholarship applications, writing winning essays and being able to stand out in the college applications.
By building a positive relationship with our mentors starting when they are in their Freshman or Sophomore years at High School, High school students have a friend in college and a role model to look up to. They feel prepared and confident about themselves which is the first step towards a successful college outcome. Who knows - the mentor could some day help your student even in college or help them get a job! SkoolMentor gives High school students an opportunity to build positive relationships - a skill that could help them beyond High School.
We have mentors who have recently graduated from college but continue to help their mentees because they are committed to their mentees' success.

How exactly does SkoolMentor work with respect to connecting mentors and mentees?

Mentees search for mentors.

Once they choose a mentor, they can click the "connect" button next to the mentee name.

A pop-up will appear asking for whether you want to connect for 3 months or for 1 hour or 30 minutes of mentoring.

Mentees choose one of the three options shown in step "c" and then the connection request is sent to the mentor. In the mentee's connections tab, the connection state is set to 'Pending'.

Now the mentee has to wait for the mentor to accept or decline the connection request. This could take a few days though we expect most mentors to be prompt in responding.

If the mentor accepts the connection, then the mentor's and mentee's connection status changes to 'Payment Pending'. At this point the mentee/parent needs to make the payment for the connection using a credit card.

Once the payment is made, the mentor and mentee can message each other. The mentee should check the mentor's schedule on the mentor profile and try to set up meeting times around that schedule. For the on-demand 1 hour or 30 minutes mentoring, the mentor and mentee have up to 3 weeks to have the actual meeting. After 3 weeks the connection will automatically reset and they will not be able to message each other through the platform.
Mentors can "invite" mentees to connect to them. Mentors may do this when they have reason to believe that they could really help those mentees based on the details mentioned in the mentee profiles.
If a mentee receives an "invite" from a mentor , then the mentee should review that mentor's profile. If it looks like a good match, then the mentee needs to follow steps "b-g" above in order to connect to that mentor.
If a mentor is a "volunteer" mentor, then the step "f" above is not needed. The mentor and mentee will be able to message each other when the mentor accepts the connection. There are no payments required to be made for "volunteer" mentor connections.
All notifications (for example when a mentor accepts a connection or when a mentee/parent makes the payment) are visible on your account on SkoolMentor.com and an email is also sent to the relevant parties (mentor, mentee or both).

Once the mentee/parent pays for the 1 hour/30 minutes on demand mentoring, we give the mentor and mentee up to 3 weeks from the date the payment was made, to have the actual meeting. If you get done with your mentoring session earlier, you may continue to get reminder emails till the 3 week period is over. You can ignore those emails. Or the mentee should provide his/her feedback on the mentoring session on SkoolMentor.com and then "reset" the connection. The link to reset the connection is present in the reminder emails. What do you mean by “Mentoring Period”?

For the on demand 1 hour/30 minutes mentoring, the mentoring period ends after 3 weeks from the date of connection establishment/payment by the mentee. This is to give the mentor and mentee enough time to schedule their 1 hour or 30 minute meeting.
For the 3 month mentoring the mentoring period ends after 3 months from the date of connection establishment/payment by the mentee.

How are mentors recruited?

Mentors from different colleges apply by sending a cover letter and their resume to careers@skoolmentor.com using their college email address. If they have been referred by another user, they mention that user's name.

The shortlisted candidates are invited for a phone interview.

After the phone interview, the selected candidates are then invited to sign up as mentors on SkoolMentor.com. They are explained the expectations as mentors and any questions/concerns they have are addressed.

What exactly is expected of me as a mentor?

Your mentee picked you because he/she values something about who you are and what you have accomplished based on your profile. Please help/guide your mentee based on your own experience and your unique perspective on the college admissions process. Your mentee might be unsure of himself/herself - perhaps you too were in a Similar situation when you were in High School. How did you overcome that or deal with it? Your mentee would appreciate such guidance. Also guidance around any specific queries your mentee might have would be very helpful. The goal is to get to know each other and for you to be able to provide adequate information and guidance to your mentee so that he/she is confident to move forward with respect to the college admissions process and beyond. Here is a short guide for mentors that should help you prepare for the role of an effective mentor. In order to get the conversation started with your mentees, we have included some sample questions that you could ask your mentees.

How much time do I need to commit?

Mentors have 3 options in terms of the time commitment towards their mentees. These are: a. The 3 month engagement model and b. The Pay-as-you-go or the 1 hour on demand engagement model c. The Pay-as-you-go or the 30 minutes on demand engagement model For the 3 month mentoring engagement model , a total time commitment of about 1.5-2 hours per month for 3 months should suffice. This includes the time spent communicating over email or on skype or by any other means. This time could be split up into smaller slots for more frequent interactions. Eg: a 25-30 minute skype or google hangout session per week for 3 months could be scheduled. With the 3 month model the goal is to get to know each other and for you to be able to provide adequate information and guidance to your mentee so that he/she is confident to move forward with respect to the college admissions process and beyond. For the pay-as-you-go or the 1 hour/30 minutes on demand engagement model - the total commitment time is 1 hour/30 minutes for one meeting only. The goal here is again to provide guidance, encouragement and information to help your mentee move forward with the college admissions process and beyond.

What's in it for me?

Apart from making some money helping younger students, the mentors who have seriously engaged with SkoolMentor have received stellar letters of recommendation from us which has helped them get outstanding paid internships, admission to top grad schools and more.
More and more companies value people who do something positive for the community. Therefore apart from feeling good, being a mentor could help you land a job because you would have demonstrated your commitment, your communication skills,
your ability to successfully multitask and your ability to work with others to drive results - exactly the set of soft skills companies look for in candidates. SkoolMentor may be able to assist with reference checks for your internship/job depending on your level of engagement with us and our current load.

Do I need to have in person meetings with my mentee?

We do not recommend in-person meetings for safety reasons.
You could meet over Skype or Google Hangouts or other such virtual meeting places.

I dont know whether I should choose the 3 month engagement model or the 1 hour/30 minutes on demand model . Can you help me decide?

The 3 month engagement model allows you to remain connected to your mentee for 3 months. This will give you enough time to really get to know your mentee and for him/her to get to know you. This in turn will help you tailor your advice in a manner that is most effective for your mentee.
Some mentees may want to connect with you with very specific questions and for them the 1 hour/30 minutes engagement model may suffice.
For College Student mentors, we encourage you to sign up for "All of the above" - which includes the "3 month" as well as the "On demand 1 hour" and "On demand 30 minutes" engagement models. This would allow mentees to connect with you with either engagement models.
If you are a Professional and if you believe your professional commitments will not allow you to commit for 3 months, then the 1 hour/30 minutes engagement model is for you. Else you too could choose "All of the above" as your engagement model.

Is there any paperwork/formalities to be completed by the mentors?

When mentors sign up or interns are recruited, they will be asked to fill out a W-9 form. The W-9 form is used to collect information such as your name, address and social security number. This information is necessary for us to comply with the IRS requirement that we issue you a form 1099 once your annual earnings exceed $600.

What should I do to make the session useful?

We understand that High School students are very busy and often stressed about the College Admissions Process. Please remember that your mentors from College or mentors who are Professionals are often even more busy than you ! So respect their time and use the time you have to interact with them wisely. Ask questions, share information or any concerns . You dont have to be shy or embarrassed if you dont yet know what you want to do in College. Sharing your thoughts may help create a more meaningful bond between you and your mentor that will help you conquer some of your concerns and enable you to move forward with the college admissions process with greater confidence. I want to schedule a new on demand session with my mentor. I am still connected from my previous session. How do I re-connect with my mentor for a new session?

Once the mentor and mentee are connected, we allow them 3 weeks to schedule their actual meeting. After 3 weeks the connection is automatically reset. If you have your meeting before the 3 week period is over and you would like to connect again for a new session then you need to first reset the original connection and issue a new connection request to your mentor. Here are the steps to follow.

You should be receiving reminder emails from SkoolMentor (check your spam folder incase you cannot find the reminder emails in your inbox). In the reminder emails, there is a link to reset the connection. Make sure you open the correct reminder email - the one for the mentor you wish to re-connect with.

Click on the reset connection link in the reminder email.

Now, send a new connection request to the mentor.

The rest of the process is as usual.
